Brief

The Miao people are an ethnic group with a large population and a long history. Miao’s culture is varied and diverse. They pride themselves upon their traditional handicrafts of wax dying, flower arranging, embroidery, textiles and silver accessories.

A popular Miao saying goes: ’The beauty of a golden pheasant lies in its feathers, the beauty of a Miao beauty lies in silver accessories for head, neck, chest, hand and children’s bonnets, and carving and patterning. Miao women love silver accessories, and believe that ‘you’re not a beauty without silver and flowers.’ At every festival banquet, Miao women wear silver headdresses, sport silver bangles, amulets and bracelets, or adorn themselves with silver chains. They also wear Miao garments that have been embroidered by their own hands, giving them an elegant, graceful and scintillating appearance.

This exhibition selects 100 refined and elegant silver accessories and costumes from Miao ethnic group, fully displaying the charm of their accessories and their unique ethnic culture, as well as revealing the ingenious ethnic handicrafts from multiple perspectives that the Miao people have maintained for a thousand years.
